Memphis Task Force Makes 51 Arrests, Seizes Guns as Manhunt Continues for Officer Shooting Suspect

WANTED: Danell Maxwell

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A multi-agency task force targeting violent crime in Memphis made 51 arrests and recovered seven illegal firearms during a recent enforcement operation, authorities said.

The Memphis Safe Task Force executed the arrests Thursday as part of its ongoing effort to locate fugitives, disrupt drug activity, and reduce violent crime across the city.

Among those taken into custody was 35-year-old Demario Anderson, who was arrested in St. Louis, Missouri, in connection with a Shelby County homicide. Authorities said Anderson had been wanted for second-degree murder since November 2025. Investigators tracked his location and coordinated with U.S. Marshals in Missouri, who arrested him at a residence on June Avenue. He is awaiting extradition back to Shelby County.

In a separate case, 35-year-old Joshiwa Penrod was arrested in Germantown following a traffic stop conducted by Tennessee Highway Patrol troopers. Authorities said officers recovered suspected methamphetamine, fentanyl, THC products, and a .38-caliber revolver. Penrod faces charges including possession with intent to distribute and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony.

Investigators also arrested 31-year-old Decorian Young at a residence on Ashridge Place. Deputies executing a search warrant recovered a Glock 19 handgun and approximately 45 pounds of marijuana. Young was taken into custody without incident and faces drug distribution charges.

Manhunt Underway for Officer Shooting Suspect

Authorities are continuing to search for 40-year-old Danell Maxwell, who is wanted in connection with the shooting of a Memphis police officer during a traffic stop on February 27. Maxwell faces charges including attempted first-degree murder, aggravated assault, and use of a firearm during the commission of a dangerous felony.

Officials said Maxwell has been added to the Tennessee Most Wanted list and should be considered armed and dangerous. A combined reward of up to $32,500 is being offered for information leading to his arrest.

Ongoing Efforts to Reduce Violent Crime

Since its launch in September 2025, the Memphis Safe Task Force has made more than 8,000 arrests, including 51 for homicide, 888 for drug-related offenses, 714 for firearms violations, and 101 for sex-related crimes. Authorities said 224 juveniles and 835 known gang members have been among those arrested.

The task force has also seized more than 1,300 illegal firearms and located 150 missing children.

Officials said the operation reflects continued coordination among federal, state, and local agencies, as well as the Tennessee National Guard, to identify and apprehend individuals considered threats to public safety.
