MADISONVILLE, Tenn. – A former employee who police said was armed with multiple guns inside a Tennessee Department of Human Services office has died after being shot by a Madisonville police officer, according to the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation.
The TBI identified the person as Rosa Barker, 41.
The shooting happened shortly before 5 p.m. Tuesday at the Department of Human Services office in the 600 block of Anderson Street.
Preliminary information indicates officers responded to reports that a former employee was inside the building with multiple guns. Several law enforcement agencies responded to the scene.
During the response, a Madisonville police officer fired a service weapon, striking Barker. The TBI said the circumstances that led the officer to fire remain under investigation.
Barker was transported to a local hospital for treatment. The TBI announced in an update Wednesday afternoon that she had died.
No law enforcement officers or state employees were injured.
At the request of 10th Judicial District Attorney General Stephen Hatchett, TBI special agents are investigating the shooting, collecting evidence and interviewing witnesses to determine what occurred before and during the encounter.
The agency said its findings will be provided to the district attorney general, who will determine whether the officer’s actions were legally justified.
The TBI did not identify the officer who fired the shots.
