MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – A 19-year-old woman is accused of robbing and kidnapping a customer after he had trouble withdrawing money from an ATM to pay her for hairstyling services, according to Murfreesboro police.
Makayla Brown was arrested Thursday, Oct. 1, and charged with especially aggravated kidnapping and aggravated robbery. She remained in the Rutherford County Adult Detention Center on a $40,000 bond.
The 23-year-old victim told police the encounter began after he was unable to withdraw money to pay Brown for hairstyling services.
According to his account to investigators, Brown and several men got into his vehicle and accompanied him to multiple locations as he continued trying unsuccessfully to withdraw the money.
The situation escalated when the victim said he was robbed at gunpoint. The group took his cellphone and car keys and dragged him into an apartment on St. Andrews Drive, according to police.
The man eventually escaped by jumping from the apartment’s balcony. He ran to a nearby store and called police.
Detectives with the Murfreesboro Police Department’s Criminal Investigations Division and members of its Special Operations Unit later executed a search warrant at the apartment.
Investigators recovered two firearms and the victim’s car keys, police said.
Authorities have not identified the men accused of accompanying Brown or said how many other people are suspected of participating. Police said the investigation remains active and additional arrests are possible.
Brown is scheduled to appear in General Sessions Court on Dec. 17.
