Nashville police arrested a 16-year-old at his high school Friday in the October 15 Madison apartment complex murder that killed 21-year-old John J. Diaz and wounded his 14-year-old brother.
Officers charged the teen with criminal homicide, attempted criminal homicide and engaging in a criminal conspiracy. Police did not release his name because of his age.
The shooting happened in the parking lot of Birchstone Village Apartments on N. Dupont Avenue. Police said Diaz and his brother were inside a car when several people walked up and fired shots.
Detective Jeff Jobe of the Metro Nashville Police Homicide Unit is leading the investigation, which police said is continuing. Detectives are looking at a potential robbery motive.
Police have not said whether they expect more arrests. The source material refers to “individuals” who approached the car, but it does not say how many.
The charges are accusations. The teen is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
