MEMPHIS, TN — A 20-year-old man was arrested in an East Memphis apartment complex parking lot after a mother intercepted explicit digital messages on her 13-year-old daughter’s phone and alerted authorities to an impending in-person meeting.
Tyrone Clayton was taken into custody on Tuesday, June 23, 2026, by the Memphis Police Department (MPD). Clayton has been formally charged with Attempted Statutory Rape, and his bond has been set at $10,000.
Mother Intercepts Planned Meeting
The incident began when the victim’s mother discovered a string of concerning messages between her young daughter and an adult male. Review of the chat logs revealed that during the digital exchange, Clayton was explicitly made aware that the victim was only 14 years less than the age of consent (13 years old).
Despite knowing the child’s age, Clayton allegedly continued the conversation and actively coordinated a time and place to meet the minor in person.
Upon realizing a physical rendezvous had been established, the mother immediately contacted the Memphis Police Department.
Parking Lot Interception
Officers dispatched to the scene converged on the 4000 block of St. Pierre in East Memphis, where the meeting was scheduled to take place. Upon arriving at the apartment complex, tactical units identified Clayton waiting in the parking lot and took him into custody without incident.
MPD officials heavily commended the mother’s fast actions, noting that her direct intervention prevented a potentially dangerous scenario and allowed officers to intercept the suspect before contact could be made with the child.
Parental Safety Notice: The Memphis Police Department encourages parents and guardians to remain actively involved in monitoring their children’s digital footprint and communications. Suspicious or solicitous activity by adults targeting minors should be reported immediately to local law enforcement.
