A 10-year-old girl died Tuesday evening in a single-vehicle crash on Bell Road in Nashville, according to the Metropolitan Nashville Police Department.

The crash happened at 6:50 p.m. in the 3500 block of Bell Road. The girl was a passenger in a 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee driven by her 40-year-old mother.

What investigators say happened

Police said the preliminary investigation shows the driver was heading south on Bell Road when she failed to negotiate a right-hand curve. Investigators do not know why.

The Jeep crossed oncoming traffic and ran off the roadway. It struck a tree on the passenger side, police said.

Both the driver and the girl were wearing seat belts. Police said there were no indicators of impairment.

The department’s initial report did not say whether the driver was hurt, and it did not name either person.

The investigation is continuing, and police have not said what caused the driver to lose control.
