MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A 31-year-old woman has been found guilty of aggravated child abuse and neglect after a Shelby County jury deliberated for approximately one hour, the Shelby County District Attorney’s Office announced.
Jasmine Irby, 31, was convicted as charged on Friday, September 4, 2026, of Aggravated Child Abuse and Aggravated Child Neglect following a trial in Shelby County.
Abuse Details and Injuries
The charges stemmed from an investigation involving a 6-year-old child who suffered second-degree burns to his hand and head. Evidence presented at trial showed that Irby inflicted the burn injuries by subjecting the child to scalding hot water as a form of punishment.
Additional evidence revealed that the 6-year-old victim was also forced to stand outside in cold weather wearing only pajamas.
Defense Testimony and Impeachment
During the trial, Irby took the stand in her own defense and testified that she “only” burned the child’s hand, seeking to minimize her actions despite medical evidence documenting severe burn injuries to both the child’s hand and head.
Assistant District Attorneys Annika Rush and Fredricka Brown successfully impeached Irby’s testimony using recorded jail phone calls that contradicted her claims on the stand. Prosecutors noted that staff member Foltrigg provided critical assistance in locating and reviewing the recorded jail calls prior to trial.
