Guns Stolen From Vehicles in Nashville Make Up 69% of 2026 Thefts

Thieves have taken 551 guns from vehicles in Nashville so far this year, according to the Metro Nashville Police Department. That accounts for 69% of all guns stolen in 2026, and police are again urging drivers to lock up and take their keys.

Across Davidson County, 792 guns have been stolen this year. Fifteen of the guns taken from vehicles in Nashville disappeared last week alone, MNPD said.

Fewer thefts than last year

The numbers are down from 2025. At this point last year, 834 guns had been stolen from vehicles, which puts this year’s total 283 lower.

Even with the drop, vehicles remain the most common place for gun thefts in the city.

What police want drivers to do

MNPD strongly encourages Nashvillians and visitors to lock their car doors, secure any valuables, especially guns, and remove the keys.

The department also pointed to a link between stolen cars and other crime. Like guns taken from vehicles, stolen autos routinely turn up in criminal activity, including carjackings and robberies.

Recent cases show how that plays out. Police have reported on a string of stolen vehicle thefts in Nashville that ended in arrests. In another case, Nashville police recovered a stolen SUV and three firearms and arrested three teens.

MNPD’s message to drivers is the same as before: lock the doors, keep guns and other valuables out of sight or with you, and never leave keys in the car.
