Knoxville police arrested 38-year-old Shelby Lloyd Jr. of Knoxville on Friday in connection with a Knoxville road rage shooting on I-40 on October 18. He is charged with two counts of attempted first-degree murder and two counts of employing a firearm during a dangerous felony.

Police said officers stopped Lloyd’s vehicle, detained him and questioned him at the Knoxville Police Department. Detectives then took him into custody.

What police say happened on I-40

Officers responded at about 9:15 p.m. on Sunday, October 18, to I-40 East at North Gallaher View Road after a report of a road rage shooting. There they met a 25-year-old woman who said she was driving from Niota back to Knoxville when a red pickup truck began following her.

She told officers the truck tailgated her for several miles. She said she saw the driver yelling with a firearm in his hand.

As she approached the Bridgewater Road area on I-40 East, the woman said, the driver fired multiple rounds at her vehicle. Her one-year-old child was in the vehicle with her.

Police said the driver kept going on I-40 East and took the Walker Springs Road exit.

No one hurt

Gunfire hit the woman’s vehicle at least twice. Nobody was struck or injured, according to police.

Detectives with the KPD Violent Crimes Unit and Gun Team spent days on the investigation. Police said that work identified Lloyd as the suspect.

The department described the investigation as exhaustive. It did not say what evidence led detectives to Lloyd or where the traffic stop happened.

The charges are accusations. Lloyd has not been convicted. The source did not list a bond amount or a court date, and it did not say whether Lloyd has an attorney.
