Memphis Police Arrest Teen Wanted in Fatal Driftwood Avenue Shooting

Jayvon Wilson

MEMPHIS, TN – The Memphis Police Department arrested a 19-year-old man Friday who investigators say was responsible for two separate shootings on May 17, including one that left a man dead.

Authorities said the department’s Fugitive Unit located and arrested Jayvon Wilson in the 4500 block of Sawmill Drive without incident.

According to investigators, officers first responded around 10:03 a.m. May 17 to a shooting in the 2100 block of Driftwood Avenue.

Police found 44-year-old Mario Butlers suffering from critical injuries. He was transported to a hospital, where he later died.

Investigators said Butlers had been involved in an argument with Wilson before the shooting, and Wilson fled the area before officers arrived.

Homicide detectives later identified Wilson as the suspect and obtained warrants charging him with second-degree murder, three counts of aggravated assault, possession of a firearm during the commission of a dangerous felony, and reckless endangerment with a deadly weapon.

Later the same day, officers responded around 5:45 p.m. to reports of gunfire in the 400 block of Foote Lane.

Investigators found a residence that had been struck multiple times by bullets while nine people were inside the home. No injuries were reported.

Police said investigators determined Wilson was also responsible for that shooting.

Additional warrants charged Wilson with attempted first-degree murder, possession of a firearm during the commission of a dangerous felony, and vandalism involving damages between $1,000 and $2,500.

Officials said Wilson was taken into custody after an extensive search and multiple investigative leads.
